Oechtering, Father Augustus B., Mishawaka, Indiana, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1883 January 26

 Item — Box: CHUD 5
Identifier: CHUD X-2-k

Scope and Contents

He takes the liberty of giving Hudson some information on Rt. Rev. Henry Joseph Richter, D.D., the newly appointed Bishop of Grand Rapids, with whom he is acquainted. He tells of the Bishop's birth in 1838 in Munster and his coming to America in 1854, where he attended St. Mary's Seminary of the West near Cincinnati. After his return from Rome as a Doctor of Theology in 1865 he taught at the Seminary with the celebrated Dr. Tobish. Then he was made Rector of a new Congregation at Warsaw and also attended the Sisters of Cedar Grove Academy. Richter is ascetic in nature, gentle and kind, a learned man but humble. He is a Bishop such as the Church will want nowadays. He studied and became intimate friends with him at the seminary from 1858 to 1860. Richter was beloved by all students, unassuming in his manner and small in size, and was a good singer in his younger days. As a preacher he was cool, clear and earnest. :: X-2-k A.L.S. 4pp. 12mo.
