Scope and Contents

He is sorry he neglected to thank Hudson for his excellent work and kind letter of last summer. He encloses a bill of exchange for 100 francs to be recorded to his credit and asks that two copies of the Ave Maria be sent to him weekly and one copy to Miss Angela Mesia O'Stuart, whose address he gives. She is a daughter of the Duke de Tamamis and will, he hopes, be a generous friend to the Ave. Enclosed is a small piece taken from the Pope's official Journal, "L'Osservatore Romano," containing an account of his missionary efforts in behalf of Central Africa. He has been able to collect funds for the Apostolic Missionary as he travels from place to place for his health. Recently at a Pontifical Mass held at Naples the collection taken up by the Apostolic Missionary himself was grand because the American Consul and all leading English and Americans were invited. It consoles him to do what he can for Catholicity because his health will not permit him to return to his own parish in Pennsylvania. If Bishop William O'Hara and Archbishop James F. Wood has helped him he could have changed the state of the infidel schools in Pennsylvania. Bishop O'Hara probably would not have sent the Sisters of the immaculate Heart of Mary to open a convent there if the Card. Prefect had not written him. Perhaps it is God's will that he is afflicted with poor health because he has opened the eyes of Rome to the state of the American Church. It must pain Hudson to learn that Bishops of the American Church are more anxious about their banking affairs than about the welfare of little ones. He is going to Naples to attend the English speaking Catholics during Lent. He has been preaching at Biarritz and only came to Rome to give the money he had collected to Cardinal John Simeoni. Simeoni was so pleased that he wrote the enclosed acknowledgement. He would like fifty copies of the Ave Maria in which this notice will be published. Much of this money came from the Americans and the Irish and he wishes them to see that he gave it to the Cardinal. He is very interested in the Ave and grateful for the notices that have appeared in it in his favor. He gives a description of himself and his work which Hudson may use with the article from "Osservatore Romano" and then gives a translation of the article. P.S. He does not wish it known that he did not agree with his bishop. Hudson can say he has the consent of the Bishop to remain in Europe until he is well enough to return. He has many enemies who would be glad to throw aspersions on his character because of his condemnation of public schools, secret societies and the whiskey men. He expects to spend some time next summer in England and Ireland and will put in a good word for the Ave. Clipping from "L'Osservatore Romano" of Jan. 18, 1883, enclosed. :: X-2-k A.L.S. 5pp. 8vo.
