Ebner, O.S.B., Father Claude Maria, Fort Yates, Dakota Territory, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1882 September 15
Scope and Contents
Ebner thanks Hudson for sending $5 for the Indian missions. The "Catholic Note", Hudson made in the Ave Maria concerning Ebner's missions had no effect. He sends a statement of his mission's financial affairs. The government builds the schools for the Indians and pays for the teachers, but Ebner has nothing for churches and for priests. Ten persons, priests, brothers and sisters are employed as teachers. For this the government pays $375 every quarter, out of which they must board themselves and provide alms for the Indians. Ebner hopes Hudson will make an appeal through the Ave Maria in behalf of the Indian missions. Bishop Martin Marty, O.S.B., will pass the winter at Fort Yates. It is hoped that he will make his headquarters at St. Benedict's Mission on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. :: X-2-j A.L.S. 3pp. 4to.
