Shea, John Gilmary, Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1882 August 31
Scope and Contents
Father Felix Martin and H. W. Tache explored the Huron country and with the aid of the Jesuit Relations have been able to locate the site of most of the missions. Father Jean de Bredeuf and Gabriel Lalemant were taken in the town called St. Louis and taken to St. Igantius where the Iroquois burned them alive. The missionaries' bodies were later found and interred at St. Mary's. It is folly to conclude that the discovery of a rosary meant that it belonged to Brebeuf since so many Catholics have resided in the area. The writer did not realize that Brebeuf was only one of thirty missionaries among the Hurons. :: X-2-j A.L.S. 3pp. 12mo.
