Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E., Notre Dame, Indiana, to Kehoe, Lawrence, New York, New York, 1882 May 15
Scope and Contents
Hudson was sorry to find Bishop John L. Spalding 's essay on the Virgin Mary reprinted in the volume that Kehoe has just issued, without reference to the Ave Maria for which it was originally written. Hudson holds the copyright. It is true Hudson did not pay for the essay, but did not offer remuneration for fear of giving offense. The volume was given favorable notice in the Ave Maria and the Scholastic. Hudson is not unfriendly to the Catholic Publishing Society, but it seems it is unfriendly to Notre Dame . If Kehoe's publications are not purchased extensively at Notre Dame, it is because Father Timothy Maher, C.S.C., has reasons of his own for buying other books. The Catholic World either avoids noticing everything emanating from Notre Dame or goes out of its way to say something unfavorable. Hudson received the Catholic World as a subscriber rather than send the Ave Maria where it was not welcome. Hudson heard that Father Isaac Hecker spoke disparagingly of the Ave Maria to a London Catholic publisher some years ago, while another of the Paulist Fathers had dissuaded a lady in Detroit from subscribing to it. Hudson does not write in anger, but he is conscious of having self-respect and he wishes to know where he stands. He thinks the Scholastic had better be discontinued to the Catholic World, and Kehoe's publications should not be sent here to either periodical for review. Kehoe will not be troubled with anything published at Notre Dame. Hudson has yet to speak unkindly or do injury to the Catholic Publishing Society or the Congregation of St. Paul :: X-2-i A.L.S. 5pp. 8vo.
