Shea, John Gilmary, Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1882

 Item — Box: CHUD 4
Identifier: CHUD X-2-i

Scope and Contents

Shea thanks Hudson for the proof and the reminder about Father Aveneau . The death of Father Claude Allouez, S.J., Shea gives from a document published by Margry. The claims that Allouez located his grant in Indiana made Shea place his mission there but as these villages shifted easily and often it will be impossible to locate the successive spots. Francis Xavier Charlevoix, who visited the fort for several weeks, located it 20-25 leagues up the river. On leaving it he went five or six leagues up to the portage over to the Kankakee. This would fix the fort at that time and the Indians, but as the Miamis left in Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac 's time and returned the new village might be at a new site. Shea thanks Hudson for the pamphlets, but Hudson must let him return Father Francis Cointet, since Shea has a copy. :: X-2-i A.L.S. 4pp. 12mo.
