Scope and Contents

Hudson's letter received. Mail and travel has been impaired due to heavy rains that have swollen the streams. Dallas is pleased with Hudson's estimate of his paper. It seems as though the Bishops were afraid of the accusation of meddling in politics. This is at the bottom of their indifference regarding such questions as Catholic Chaplains among the Indians. A Bishop when questioned would probably say there were not sufficient priests for parish needs. If Congress grants our demands, we will not be able to provide them. Outside of the Catholic faith Dallas does not believe there is a conservative force left in the country, except in the services. In England the converts to the Church are from the class which makes the best impression on the people. The poor will always make the body of the church, but others cannot be neglected while carrying out the work of the Faith. There is some ignorance and prejudice about the Catholic faith and Dallas believes there is a party forming in the Army opposed to Catholicism. Several officer's wives made the remark that there were no Catholic Chaplains in the Army. A Baptist Chaplain is to arrive today, a Mr. Blaine, who is said to be a brother of the Senator. There are approximately 500 Catholics at Fort Clark, Texas . Dallas will do nothing to help the situation until the Catholic Bishops take up the work. Dallas agrees with Hudson on his article on possession. Dallas will have to do his part in the general court session which will occupy much of his time. Dallas discusses his daughter. Dallas did not meet Dr. Havard but his works remain to remind Dallas of him. A library donated by the Catholic Library arrived and Dallas finds nearly all of the books used by enlisted men. The papers Hudson sent and the Ave Maria are also in the library. Regards to Father General Edward Sorin and Mr. Maurice Francis Egan. Dallas would ask Hudson to came to Texas if he had more to offer after he arrived. It is rumored Dallas will be sent to Fort Duncan, on the Rio Grande River, opposite the Mexican town of Piedras Negras. Dallas will be in command at Duncan. Dallas would like Hudson to visit his wife's mother in Washington, Mrs. Masi. She will be very pleased to see Hudson. Mrs. Dallas sends kindest remembrances. :: X-2-g A.L.S. 10pp. 12mo
