Document. PROPOSAL to the National Committee on Catholic Concerns From the Catholic Peace Fellowship On "Selective" Conscientious Objection to War ~ The proposal outlines the traditional, narrow definition of conscientious objection and cites the case of Dan Seeger who refused to use theistic language in his defense of his CO status. The overrulling of his conviction has broadened the CO definition, however the law still states that a CO must object to all war in any form, rather than to a war considered to be unjust. He goes on to say that the church is failing in its teachings concerning the "just war theory" and that it owes a CO the same support it owes one who deliberately chooses to fight. The proposal urges the National Committee on Catholic Concerns to make the issue of selective conscientious objection a priority among its concerns to push this in the Catholic community. It urges the NCCC to issue a strong statement against the Vietnam War, to focus on conscientious objection, and to help locate test cases that could help expand the definition of CO in the courts.
