Document. 14-page essay written by Gordon for presentation in Toronto. ~ Gordon recounts the statement made by the Holy See in 1976 that "the armaments race is to be condemned universally." With the approach of the 2nd Speical Session on Disarmament in 1982, Gordon discusses the failure of the first statement and the escalation of the arms race. He contends that the Reagan Administration has ignored all warnings over the escalation of war and the mass production of nuclear weapons, and that there is mounting opposition all over the world to the political and military decisions of the U. S. government. He points out the increasing involvment of Catholic bishops in peace activities and organizations such as Pax Christi, and urges Canadians to start Pax Christi chapters. Gordon contends that now is the time for peace education if it is to be effective and activist witness should take place for the cause of peace as well as religious commemorations to demonstrate efforts toward peace. Every individual must take their responsibility abd protest the current trend toward destruction. ~ presented 10/28
