Document, letters. 15-page essay written by Gordon along with some correspondence between Gordon and the sisters of BENEDICTINES. ~ 7/21--The editor of BENEDICTINES writes to ask Gordon to write an article entitled "Monasticism and Peacemaking." 8/16--Gordon responds that he is busy, but he will do it. 9/15--Gordon sends a brief note along with the essay. Gordon begins his essay talking about his misconceptions of the moanstic life, and then turns his discussion to monastic involvement in the peace movement. He asserts that it is imperative that the spiritual duties of any religious order include a contribution toward peace. He points out many occasions where religious orders promote military activities such as the ROTC, as says that steps need to be taken to eliminate military associations. All monastic communities, along with the Catholic Church, must remind Christians that they must work for peace and reject war. He contends that Churchmen should publicly protest war in their religious attire whenever possible for visibility and affirmation of the Catholic pacifist position.
