Document. 6-page article in St. Anthony Messenger by Gordon Zahn ~ Gordon describes Franz Jaegerstaetter and his refusal to fight in WWI on moral grounds, a stance for which he was beheaded. He tells of how the church failed to support him in his decision, and how in WWII there was still Catholic suspicion of COs. A change came during the Vietnam war when a surprisingly large amount of people claimed CO status, but Catholic COs were still discriminated against in their parishes and homes because there was no widespread change of attitude. Gordon says that in instances of war, legalization of abortion, and other instances a Christian is obliged to take a stand agaist secular authority. He contends that provisions should be made for CO status if conscription is reinstated, and that significant efforts should go into eliminating nuclear weapons. Along with this, and most importantly, changes in attitude must take place. ~ St. Anthony's Messenger ~ 12-17 ~ May
