Document. Transcript of a speech written to be delivered by Gordon at a ceremony at La Salle College where he is to be given an honorary degree. A short letter to Dick is attached to convey travel plans. ~ Gordon equates religion to a commodity in competition with other brands of values and ideologies in the marketplace. He says that religion is suffering a crisis of credibility because it has fit too easily into the status quo and maintains much too close a partnership with the secular powers and principalities. He claims that those who are looking to return to the Church will not do so under the old terms or be satisfied with lukewarm commitment to social justice and peace which caused them to turn away in the first place, and that this is an asset to the Church rather than a liability.
