In Maes' judgement "An Invention of the Devil" would not suit the Ave Maria. He sends the translation to Hudson to be judged critically. Maes has a list of Reginald Cardinal Pole's manuscripts from the Vatican Library. He asks Hudson and Maurice Egan for information about the literature on Pole. Scope and Contents The proof is poetical, but it is not historical truth. Maes sends Hudson the first installment of an historical sketch that will acquaint Hudson with the exact truth. There are three Bismarckians and half a dozen milk and water priests in Covington who worry Meas. Hardly an educated man in the neighborhood and he thirsts for genial companionship. Archbishop William Elder is a comfort to him and some of the priests are excellent; but give him the friends of Father Maes. Could he visit...

News about Charles Warren Stoddard is comforting. Something to do is his panacea. Hudson may tell Stoddard that Maes is delighted to know that dire conviction of unescapeable duty has brought him to do so. Does Hudson know how impossible a Bishop's priests make it to be one of them and have a little sensible recreation sometimes? Brownson's Review is in danger of being discontinued for want of support. Maes names Ja(me)s W. Bryan, Lt. Governor of Kentucky, as Vice President from the Diocese of Covington, at the Catholic Congress. Maes thinks it a good idea to have lists of Catholic laymen printed, and on file, since they would be useful during any Catholic movement. If this is done, Maes would like a copy. Since Maes has had no chance to look at Catholic papers, he asks whether the Committee's actions are noticed. If not, Maes suggests an appeal of the Committee to the Catholic Press.
