Timon, Bishop John, Buffalo, New York, to Bishop Peter Paul Lefevere, Detroit, Michigan, 1862 December 10

 Item
Identifier: CDET III-2-j
Scope and Contents Timon thanks Lefevere for the copy of his last Synod. He sends an enclosure, about which the Bishop can take the lead or concur with several bishops of the Province who visited the American College at Louvain last summer and returned greatly pleased with all they saw. If he and the bishops can concur Timon thinks they could have quite a number of bishops write in the petition. He wishes Lefevere's corrections and sends a rough draft no enclosure in English of what he thought they might ask...

Scope and Contents Lefevere will no doubt be pleased to hear of the success of their application, so Timon sends an extract of a letter he lately received from Cardinal Alexander Barnabo. Does Lefevere consider the Council of Trent "quad Matrimonium vel clandestinitatem" published in the City of Detroit, or in any part of his diocese? ` On the same paper: ` His Holiness in audience August 9, regarding what the bishops of the United States have requested, has deigned to assent in everything, granting proper...

Timon thinks the question Lefevere proposes would advantageously be offered to the next Council. It surely should be answered that if they have means, the Bishop has no obligations. Archbishop Martin John Spalding 's letter states he will soon write to the other archbishops and call the Council. Then these archbishops will write to the suffragans. :: III-2-k A.L.S. 1p. 16mo.

Scope and Contents Senator Dixon's move to exempt clergymen has been negatived. Several bishops have answered Timon that they will use all influence they can and also get some Protestant ministers to join. He sees a scheme by some few fanatics. Two classes will be formed, the first, unmarried men from 20 to 45, the second, married men of the same age; the first class to be exhausted before the second is drawn upon. The injustice is so manifest that if efforts are made, they can at least obtain the amendment...

Scope and Contents David's letter of December 19 reached Timon this evening. The affectionate respect impressed on Timon since his visit to Kentucky and David's kindness makes his wishes for information a command though the subject is a very delicate one. Mr. Ratigan came here on June 9, 1831. About a year afterward sickness rendered study impossible. He left a year ago. Scope and Contents Some time ago James wrote by a gentleman going to the Barrens with a letter of introduction from the Messrs. Walsh. But as he understood after that John was at the Cape, perhaps he did not receive it. Scope and Contents Bishop Joseph Rosati arrived thursday but not in time for James to write. The bishop brought a clergyman with him but only for a few days. Nancy has been very sick this week; she is getting better, but very troublesome. James received a letter from Owen Timon of the 2nd. He said he was then starting, had bought a horse and was intending to see Burns' place and, if he liked it, to bargain for it. Edward Walsh has a friend who has thirty-five shares of stock which he will sell at par. James has seen Hugh O'Neil. Nothing is done yet about the land. Everyone thinks it is an extravagant price. James met Chouteau? and asked him if he had property to sell out there. He said he would sell only if he got more than the worth of it, about $1200. James hears from Walsh and...
