As the letter is not marked "answered," he writes to acknowledge his oversight. Although Charles-Marie Allemand Cardinal Lavigerie has delegated Rudd to represent him and his work at the Congress, it is now too late for him to write a paper in time to submit to the advisory committee next week. Scope and Contents After repeated representations to his Superior General of the Redemptorists Ruland has been authorized to make the necessary arrangements to take charge of St. Joseph's Detroit congregation, besides that of St. Mary's Detroit if a house is to be established on a solid basis, as Ruland proposed to Lefevere in August last. Ruland's proposals deal with church property, present and future, church indebtedness, the Congregation's title to certain properties. In case the Redemptorists should leave...

Ruland, C.SS.R., Father George, Baltimore, Maryland, to Bishop Peter Paul Lefevere, Detroit, Michigan, 1859 February 17

 Item
Identifier: CDET III-2-i
Scope and Contents Ruland called to see Lefevere on his visit to Baltimore a few weeks ago to discuss some matters but was unable to see him. He now writes about these matters. Lefevere, he thinks, was quite uncharitable and unjust in his remarks, and made accusations entirely unfounded and harmful before the Archbishop Francis Patrick Kenrick and his counselors. He writes about some Mass stipends Father James Poirier, C.SS.R. gave to a secular priest who offered to say them gratis, so that the stipend money...

Scope and Contents With permission of his superior, given by letter of September 20, Ruland sets down the following points with regard to the petition of the bishop of Detroit. The Redemptorists in the United States have 11 houses which are at the same time mission-stations, from them many excellent missionaries have perished, and there are not enough men to replace them. The Superior of their American Province is disturbed. A vigorous novitiate in their American Province is not wanting, nevertheless, to be...

Mrs. Rumnig is instructed to pay Lefevere $40 for ground rent. Lefevere's letter was forwarded to Rumnig at this camp, and he regrets his unavoidable tardiness in this matter, but will be more punctual as he is making money at this military post with some goods. He asks for another lease of the lot and when the present lease expires, to regulate taxes better, he prefers to lease the whole lot. :: III-2-k A.L.S. 1p. 8vo.

Identifier: CDET III-2-k
Scope and Contents The undersigned families feel constrained to lay before Lefevere the following petition: For several years services have been held in English. The older persons do not understand this language. The greatest evil is that they cannot make their confessions in English and the priest cannot hear it in German. Russel, Father James J., Centralia, Pennsylvania, to James Alphonsus McMaster, New York, New York, 1886 July 22

 Item
Identifier: CMMA I-2-f
Scope and Contents Russel does not want the Freeman at club rates, he wants to pay full rates, and the bill that was sent him is wrong. But the bill is wrong anyhow because he presumes the paper has been sent to Peter McBauille, Ireland, since he never ordered that it be stopped. He sends $2 over and above their two subscriptions charges to take care of McBauille's postage. If this is too little, they should tell him. He had written twice, asking for his bill, and received it neither time. :: I-2-f A.L.S....

Russell, David, Nazareth, Ky., to James Alphonsus McMaster, New York, New York, 1873 January 2

 Item
Identifier: CMMA I-1-o
Scope and Contents He enclosed a report in the Louisville Courier Journal of Dec. 30, 1872, of a lecture given by Dr. Stuart Robinson. It contains an exposition on Robinson's views of unity among Christians. He though it might make good material for an article on the subject by McMaster. Robinson seems to feel the weakness of the cause which he undertakes to defend, that of the beauty of the divisions among the sects called Christians. He is sorry to find a man of seemingly good sense say such foolish...

Russell, Father James J., Columbia, Pennsylvania, to James Alphonsus McMaster, New York, New York, 1872 February 15

 Item
Identifier: CMMA I-1-o
Scope and Contents He asks that the Journal be canceled for the club raised last year by Richard Foley, since Foley declines to raise another club. Perhaps it is because McMaster did not mention Foley's work in the Journal. It may not be too late, if McMaster thinks it worth the trouble. Russell asks if his paper cannot be sent earlier in the week, as formerly. He will continue to take the paper, and asks also for the bound volumes of the Journal beginning with the proceedings of "Council of the Vatican."...

Russell, Father James J., Columbia, Pennsylvania, to James Alphonsus McMaster, New York, New York, 1879 February 26

 Item
Identifier: CMMA I-2-c
Scope and Contents He heard of the Bishop of Altan's interdict on the Journal but he does not know whether to congratulate McMaster or offer him his sympathies. He does not think the Bishop will lift the interdict soon because of the tone and nationalism of the pastoral. Then only fear of a higher authority will force the Bishop to rectify the injury done to McMaster. He would not like McMaster to use the civil courts but suggests that he use his influence in Rome. Russell has subscribed to the Cleveland...

 Item — Box CHUD 1
Identifier: CHUD X-2-d
Scope and Contents Russell wrote that he considered the greater portion of "My Aunt Winifred" in the Ave Maria all right but he believes parts of it are bad and will cause scandal. He wrote the editor of the Freeman Journal, N. Y. Suggesting that he criticize the article. He thinks that certain sentences on page 213 teach a doctrine contrary to that taught by theologians about the impediment disparitus cultus. He questions the part which states that Winifred was married by a Methodist minister without...

 Item — Box CHUD 7
Identifier: CHUD X-2-o
Scope and Contents Henry Cardinal Manning after receiving the book sent a letter of praise, which shows that he read ten of the poems. Aubrey de Vere 's criticism came naturally but Manning's letter deified Russell knowing how he treats people. Cordial reviews were given by the Graphic, the Weekly Register, United Ireland, Nation, Dublin Freeman's Journal and the Daily Express. Russell's young friend's honeymoon of fame is not over. The preliminary work of welcome for "A Troubled Heart" in the Irish...

Russell wants to thank Hudson for printing his poems, Hudson should not be thanking him. He asks Hudson to send a copy to him when he prints anything that he has written. Russell is sending Hudson a two-shilling book of Eucharistic Verses, and he is sure that Hudson will be kind enough to give notice of it in the Ave Maria. He would like Hudson to send that number to him. :: X-2-d A.L.S. 4pp. crown 8vo.

Scope and Contents Russell hopes that Hudson is over his illness. Russell thanks Hudson for his useful review of "Emmanuel", and says that the success of his "Emmanuel" is a surprise to him. He printed "Alive" from Miss O'Meara's manuscript and paid her for it as for her originals although she told Russell that it was only an improved edition of something she had already had printed in America. Russell has great confidence in the writings of Miss Mahoney and Miss Attie O'Brien as their stories are very...

Scope and Contents

Russell wishes Hudson a Happy and Holy May. No one deserves it more than the editor of the Ave Maria. Some of his friends are going to subscribe for the Ave Maria. Russell, S. J. Father Matthew, Dublin, Ireland, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1879 November 11

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-e
Scope and Contents Hudson is very kind about his little bits of verse, he is sure Hudson is bored by many of them, but the enclosed would be likely to please some. It is a shame and a sin for Russell to have let Hudson pay a half penny for the Irish Monthly. He will mark Hudson down for a free copy from now on, and allow him to send Russell the Ave Maria. He inquires about the rate of exchange. Now that the postage is the same all over the country, the Irish Monthly ought to aspire to a modest American...
