Content Description

This collection consists of architectural project reports created by Richard “Dick” Galehouse during his career as principal and senior planner at Sasaki, an integrated planning and design firm based in Boston. The collection also contains articles written by Galehouse, copies of his service projects for the Urban Land Institute, master plans, and lectures. Significant projects include University of South Carolina master plan, Georgia State University master plan, Southwood, Florida community urban design, the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Materials include lectures, articles, panel reports, conference presentations, master plans, schematics, environmental impact statements, technical memorandum, and and compact discs (CDs).

Biographical / Historical

Richard Galehouse received a Bachelor of Architecture from Notre Dame and a Masters in City and Regional Planning from Harvard Graduate School of Design. Galehouse joined the planning firm Sasaki in 1961 where he served as principal and senior planner. Galehouses’ work is wide-ranging and he has contributed to projects focused on University planning, environmental sustainability, and urban regeneration.

Galehouse was instrumental in the development of the University of South Carolina masterplan and played a significant role in the development of the Presidio Trust Management plan in San Francisco. He was a key figure in the planning for the 1980 winter games in Lake Placid, NY, the 1984 summer games in Los Angeles, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Galehouse became involved with the Urban Land Institute in 1979 and is the author of the recent book The Power of the Plan, Building a University in Historic Columbia, South Carolina.
