 Item — Box: MSSP10023
Identifier: MSSP_10023

Content Description

One scrapbook documenting sporting events hosted by the Huddersfield Athletic Club, of Huddersfield, England, located between Manchester and Leeds. The majority of the items preserved in the scrapbook relate to one of two annual events. About half of the the material documents the annual indoor "Assault at Arms" competition held in the club gymnasium during the winter, which featured boxing, gymnastics, fencing, and Indian club exercises. The majority of the rest of the materials document the annual outdoor "Grand Athletic Festival" held at Rifle Field in Huddersfield, which featured track and field events like running, walking, hurdle events, jumping, weights, as well as some equestrian activities. Some of the events were advertised as open at all "Gentlemen Amateurs," while some events were reserved only for club members. The scrapbook includes plentiful epehemera, including broadsides, programs, and tickets, some newspaper clippings, and a small number of letters about the events.
