Biographical / Historical

Billed as the “Indianapolis 500 of the West,” the Ontario Motor Speedway (OMS) was a major motor sports racing track located in Ontario, California. The state-of-the-art facility was designed to accommodate each of the major automobile racing circuits, including the United States Automobile Club (UASC, now Indy Car) open-wheel oval races, NASCAR stock car oval races, National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag races, and an infield track for Formula One street-syle races. Built in less than two years, OMS opened in August 1970. The track’s marquee event, the California 500 was run over Labor Day weekend and was modeled after the Indianapolis 500. With the help of heavy marketing and promotion and other events including motorcycle races and air race, the Ontario Motor Speedway’s first season was a financial success. In subsequent years, however, declining attendance and increasing debt payments led to financial difficulties, and OMS closed in 1980.
