Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 41 scrapbooks about professional boxers. The scrapbooks were compiled by an unknown person and contain almost exclusively articles and photographs clipped from various newspapers and periodicals dating from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, although some of the material is retrospective. Sources for the clippings include daily newspapers and boxing periodicals. There are few citations included. Most scrapbooks are devoted to the exploits and career of individual boxers, including many of the notable professional fighters of the first half of the twentieth century. Three scrapbooks at the end of the run are devoted to African-American Fighters, Irish-American Fighters, and Italian-American Fighters. Clippings in the scrapbooks are usually arranged chronologically. Most scrapbooks most measure approximately 10.5 x 7.25 inches, and they average about forty leaves with clippings on both recto and verso.

Formats include scrapbooks and clippings.
