Biographical / Historical
Starting in the late nineteenth century, journalists and sportswriters began choosing “All American” football teams to recognize the best college football players in the country. The earliest All American teams were chosen under the auspices of and publicized by general interest magazines. Eastern schools, particularly Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Penn, dominated the earliest All American teams, and publications in other sections of the country would sometimes choose regional All-Star teams, like “All Western” teams. During the twentieth century the geographic scope of college football grew, and schools in more parts of the country placed players on All American teams.
