During Evers' tenure as general manager of the Albany club in the International League, he signed a man recently released from Sing Sing Prison, Edwin C. "Alabama" Pitts, to a player contract. The signing became a matter of considerable controversy, and was vetoed by the IL and the National Association before being upheld by Commissioner Landis.
