Scope and Contents

Eduard Kuznetsov is a Soviet-born human-rights activists and writer. He was first incarcerated by in 1961 for making political statements during poetry readings on Mayakovsky square in Moscow. In 1968, he became involved in a plan by 16 Soviet refuseniks to hijack an aircraft in Riga and then fly it out of the Soviet Union. After being arrested for his role in the plot, Soviet authorities sentenced him to death, but then reduced his sentence to a prison term of 15 years, largely in response to pressure from the international community. In this interview, which took place immediately after his release in 1979, Kuznetsov briefly discusses his new-found freedom and his experiences in prison.
