Photographs documenting the Gdansk shipyard strike, 1980 August
Scope and Contents
Thirteen silver gelatin photopraph prints documenting a foundational event of the Polish Solidarity movement, the strike at the Gdansk shipyard in August 1980. This event led to a general strike by other unions throughout Communist Poland. The images depict striking workers on the shipyard walls with protest graffiti and slogans as well as an icon of the Virgin Mary and a photograph of Pope John II, the assembled masses in front of the main entrance to the shipyard (Stocznia Gdańska im. Lenina), Holy Mass celebrated amidst the masse by Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, as well as several photographs of Lech Wałęsa being interviewed and in negotiations with other strike leaders. Some images are attributed to photographer Edward Müller (born 1958), an opposition figure and trade union activist who helped organize Solidarity structures in and near his native Gdansk.
