Scope and Contents

Alphabetically arranged records containing general correspondence and subject files, budgets, contracts, documents concerning development and maintenance of the campus, and documentation of interactions with faculty, administration, alumni, and the world outside Notre Dame. The records of Notre Dame presidents were once numbered in a single sequence throughout the record group, and the four boxes from the Burns presidency are still numbered as if they were part of that sequence, boxes 43 through 46. Eventually they will be reprocessed and renumbered, but for the time being they retain their original numbers, which have been cited in published works.

Biographical / Historical

Born 13 February 1867 in Michigan City, Indiana, James A. Burns became a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross and Notre Dame faculty member: Assistant Professor of Chemistry (1881-1892), Professor of Chemistry (1893-1900); President of the University of Notre Dame (1919-1922). In later life he served as head of Holy Cross College in Washington, DC (1926-1927), as head of the Indiana Province of the Holy Cross Fathers (beginning in 1927), and as First-Assistant Superior General (beginning in 1938). He died 9 September 1940.
