Background
Irish revolutionary sentenced to death in 1848. After escaping to the United States, he became editor of the Irish News. He served the Union in the Civil War as leader of the Irish Brigade. In 1865 he accepted the job of Territorial Secretary of Montana and in 1866 served as Acting Territorial Governor.
