Dwenger, Joseph, Bishop of Fort Wayne, Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Archbishop John Baptist Purcell, of Cincinnati, Ohio, 1873 September 11
Scope and Contents
He is sorry that Purcell cannot come, for he knows that he would rejoice at what has been done here. He is hopeful for the future, although there is still a great deal to be done. He has a good and united clergy. He does not wonder that Bishop Edward Fitzgerald of Little Rock feels discouraged in his great and at the same time, small diocese. But Arkansas has all the requirement for future prosperity. In the case of Father William? Anderson he agrees with Purcell. Better no priest at all than a bad one. He had never heard of that pretended Franciscan Standers before, nor did he find his name in any Catholic Almanac. He is sure that Father Edward Purcell would enjoy a trip to Fort Wayne. He has heard that the Sisters of the Holy Cross are establishing a house in Rome. He is afraid they consult Purcell very little and he knows they are glad that Dwenger has no authority over them. He knows of no scandals among them but there are some things about them that he does not like. He will try to visit Purcell this month or next. :: II-5-f A.L.S. 3pp. 12mo.
