Seeing the impossibliity of Purcell supplying priests speaking both French and German, in his circumstance he will not invite a German priest outside of the French, English, and friendly Germans of St. Louis and St. Philomena's congregations. There would be few for the German to attend. He believes he can satisfy most of his parishoners. He does not manifest exteriorly his devotion to the Holy Father, but he shares the feelings of the bishops and priests about the indignities heaped upon the Holy Father, Pius IX.
