Clarke's delay in answering Edwards' letter was due to an ordeal of affliction and sorrow unequaled in his life. The loss of his daughter left him utterly prostrated and he spent ten days in Washington. He feels better, but is not strong and is heavily worked. He is busy getting out the third volume of the Lives of the Bishops as well as the entire set of three volumes. Clarke is having the book printed at their Protectory and is engaged in correcting proofs and sending out 5000 circulars. About one-third of the volume has been electrotyped and work is proceeding rapidly. Clarke has also corrected and added to the first two volumes. He thinks the volume will be ready in April or sooner. Clarke is saving the manuscript for Edwards as he requested. :: XI-1-f A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo.
