O'Connell, Bishop Eugene, Los Angeles, California, to James F. Edwards, Notre Dame, Indiana, 1887 January 21
Scope and Contents
The mitre sent Edwards was the one presented to him in All Hallows College, Dublin, at the time of his consecration by Cardinal Cullen, then Archbishop of Dublin, Feb. 3, 1861. The Pectoral cross which he wears was the gift of Mrs. Segrave, mother of Father Segrave, S. J. The ring he uses at present is the gift of Archbishop(Joseph S.) Alemany now in Valencia, Spain. After the Vicariate of Marysville had been erected into the Diocese of Grass Valley in 1868, - O'Connell's translation never took place owing to the reduced condition of Grass Valley- he received from Alemany the crosier sent to Edwards. Since his resignation he has lived in Los Angeles as the guest of Bishop (Francis) Mora. He will send a lock of his hair.
