Newspaper Article. "Catholic devotes his life to peace" ~ Newspaper article in the Wisconsin State Journal by Wineke on Gordon Zahn ~ During WWII Zahn was one of about 150 Roman Catholic conscientious objectors. His life has been dedicated to furthering the cause of peace, and he has watched the Catholic peace movement grow. Zahn states "I certainly never would have expected to see priests and nuns going to jail to protest war." Zahn is heartened by the changes in the Church's policy on pacifism. Conscientious objectors in WWII were called cowards by Catholic bishops, but during Vietnam bishops were calling for selective conscientious objection and amnesty for resisters. Zahn expresses his wish for the peace movement and the "right to life" anti-abortion movement to come together and realize "the heart of both positions is the rejection of the destruction of human life to justify individual or social purposes."
