Gordon writes about the important contributions Archbishop Roberts has made to the fuller understanding of the individual's right to set those limits as they relate to his own moral behavior. Roberts prefers instead to speak of "conscientious abstention" (rather than conscientious objection). There are some advantages to the term he proposes: abstention is a broader concept; it would include refusal to obey, intentional avoidance of voluntary participation, and even partial obedience. The basic lesson to be learned is that what is really required of the Christian is nothing less than conscientious action in all situations and under all circumstances.
