General

Correspondence. Gordon spent the weekend in Boston sightseeing -- looking at monuments. He said that he lost some of his patriotic ideas. If the South had won the Civil War, Lincoln might have been viewed as attempting to suppress the freedom of the states. (This depends on the point of view which we learn history. ) "To say we are free because people killed each other to make us free is just like saying that the sun is in the middle of the sky because the clock says it is twelve o'clock."
