Prosecution of witchcraft in San Luis Potosí, 1774-1776

Scope and Contents

Inquisitorial trial concerning alleged witchcraft, with resulting illness and possible possession, by a woman named "San Juana" and her daughter Viviana. Denunciations by Maria de los Santos Tobar and others. The accused do not seem to have been found or interrogated. Testimony describes rural society and beliefs in the region of Potosí (Mexico), including expert opinion of a doctor confirming likely use of sorcery. Case dismissed of rlack of evidence in 1776.

Summary of 1594 trial, with secret evidence of numbered witnesses. Ana was condemned to death for Judaizing practices, with sentence commuted after reconciliation at a 1596 Auto de fe to confiscation of goods and perpetual prison. The document notes she was a good prisoner and recommends further commutation; a marginal note declares she was released in 1600. A later transcription of the document is included.

Letters from an Aragonese noble to cardinal Vicenzo Grimani (with copies in both Spanish and Italian, dated 1707) reporting on alleed archiepiscopal and inquisitorial anti-Hapsburg activities. Archbishop Antonio Ibáñez de la Riva's edict denouncing anti-Bourbon rebels follows. Both documents have ben copied into a larger cartulary in a contemporary hand, foliated 344-350 and 352.
