Abstract

A group of around 60 manuscript personal letters, almost all written by and/or to members of the Jackson family of Moore County, North Carolina before and during the Civil War. The collection includes letters of eleven Confederate States soldiers, serving in the 26th or 30th North Carolina Infantry or the 2nd North Carolina Cavalry.

Scope and Contents This collection chiefly consists of the correspondence of Mary Taussig Hall. Early letters (circa 1920s) to and from Mary Taussig Hall frequently concern her family, travels, and studies. Later (1930s-) topics of note include her family and social life, travels, and growing interest in social work and political causes. A manuscript diary for 1860 kept by a doctor named Ostrom Stephen Lont, from Mazeppa, Wabasha County, Minnesota. Accompanying the diary are around 40 unidentified carte-de-visite portrait photographs and two Lont family bibles.
