Abstract

A collection of records, mostly financial, of the Birmingham (Alabama) Black Barons Negro Leagues professional baseball club. The most significant item in the collection is a manuscript cash book, showing the club's financial accounts with each of its players for the seasons 1926 through 1930.

Content Description 15 letters and cards written and signed by former Negro Leagues players responding to autograph collector Joel Meltzer. The correspondence ranges from small cards to multi-page letters. The authors of many letters discuss the best players they faced, answer other questions, and sometimes provide biographical details. Content Description This collection contains papers and correspondence gathered by Richard Powell in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Powell was an executive with the Baltimore Elite Giants, an African American professional baseball team. The Elite Giants played in the Negro National League from 1933-1948 and the Negro American League in 1949-1950.
