Hank Lubben New Jersey Amateur Baseball Correspondence
Content Description
This collection contains correspondence and other material related to Henry "Hank" Lubben's longtime involvement in amateur and semi-professional baseball in New Jersey during the 1930s and 1940s. Approximately 350 letters, 1000 postcards, and other printed ephemera document the organization and administration of amateur baseball leagues and teams during the heyday of baseball's popularity in the United States.
The correspondence chronicles Lubben's work to manage his teams, find new players, arrange games, and help administer the Suburban Baseball League. A few teams from the organized minor leagues are represented in the correspondence, but the vast majority of teams in the collection were local and regional amateur and semi-professional squads.
The collection contains correspondence received by Lubben from booking agents, team managers, readers of his newspaper stories, and other people inquiring about the Suburban League and amateur baseball. The postcards mainly include requests for games, suggestions for opponents, confirmations of dates and venues for games, and other administrative data. The letters tend to provide more in-depth information, including discussions and negotiations with managers, players, and booking agents; scouting reports; game reports; and other details about teams, games, and leagues. Most letters are accompanied by their original mailing evnvelopes. The collection also includes some printed and mimeographed ephemera related to teams, leagues, games, booking agents, sporting good dealers, and others interested in amateur baseball.
Formats includes letters, postcards, and ephemera.

Biographical / Historical
Henry Frederick "Hank" Lubben (1915-2013) was heavily involved with amateur and semi-professional baseball in New Jersey in the 1930s amd 1940s. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Lubben reportedly graduated from Seton Hall University in 1939 with a degree in Business Administration. He worked for many years at the State of New Jersey Department of Labor and Industry. In his free time, Lubben helped organize and promote amateur baseball teams and leagues in the Jersey area. He helped to found the long-running Suburban League—headquartered in Bloomfield, New Jersey, outside of Newark—and served in various administrative capacities for the league. He helped manage and coach several teams in these years, including the Emerald Athletic Club and the Pittsburgh Minor Leaguers (who had no apparent connection with the Pittsburgh Pirates). Lubben often umpired baseball games, and he was a member of the New Jersey State Umpire Association for three decades. He also wrote articles for the sports sections of various newspapers in the state. Lubben died in Bloomfield, New Jersey, in 2013 at the age of 98.
