Content Description

Scrapbook compiled by Arthur Vincent Taylor, which includes manuscripts, correspondence clippings, ephemera, and other material. The content in the scrapbook recounts events throughout his life from high school to retirement. The scrapbook includes considerable material about his years at Williams College, including his participation in sports; his high school teaching career in Newark, New Jersey; his adult amateur golfing; and his sportswriting, especially about fishing and golf.

The front cover of the scrapbook contains a table of contents reading: "Memoranda, Notes, and Clippings; Schooling; Teaching - day and evening schools; Candidacy - principalship and assistant superintendent; Memorial tablets; Trip - British schools; Golf; Fishing; Banquets; Retirement; Miscellaneous."

Biographical / Historical

Born in 1863 in New Jersey, Arthur Vincent Taylor graduated from Williams College graduate in 1886. For 40 years, he was a teacher of Latin at Barrington High School in Newark, New Jersey, where he also supervised the evening high school classes. Taylor was an avid golfer and angler, and wrote articles for numerous sporting publications, including, The American Golfer, Outdoor Life, and other periodicals. In 1912 he published a book about the history of golf,Origines Golfianae. Taylor died in Portland, Maine, near his summer home in 1941.
