Content Description

The primary item in this collection is a scrapbook compiled by the physical culture enthusiast and swimming and diving instructor Daniel P. Connor, Jr. The main focus of the scrapbook is the young cliff divers that Connor taught. The scrapbook particularly covers the performance of the divers during the summer of 1922 and at the Manchester, New Hampshire, Winter Carnival of 1923. During the Carnival, the young daredevil cliff divers dove through ice and received considerable publicity. There is one additional box with 6 folders of loose insertions.

Biographical / Historical

Daniel P. Connor, Jr. (1870-1953) was born in Manchester, New Hampshire. In the early twentieth century, Connor taught swimming and diving to children at the quarry pond known as Amoskeag Ledge. Among Connor's "quarry kids" were a group of boys who performed daredevil dives from heights of up to 100 feet.
