Scope and Contents

This collection contains media guides published by NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing). The annual guides published prior to each NASCAR season generally included a review of the previous season including statistics and race results, a preview of the upcoming season, and driver profiles. Other content sometimes included broader material about the history of races or racetracks and other information for the media. Many guides contain pictures and advertisements. Over the years, the guides went by several different names, including “yearbook”, “record book”, “hand book”, and “press guide.” The guides tend to become larger, longer, and more substantial through the years. Formats include media guides.

Biographical / Historical

Media guides—also known as press guides or “dope books”—originated by the 1930s as a way for sports teams and leagues to provide information to members of the press. Originally typed, mimeographed, and stapled sheets, the guides evolved dramatically after World War Two to highly informative trade paper publications available to the public. By the early 21st century, online guides frequently replaced printed guides.
