Scope and Contents

Short entries made at irregular intervals during Foote's voyage from New York to California via Nicaragua aboard the Steamer San Francisco. Foote records locations reached, weather, financial transactions, daily pastimes, and significant events in his detachment such as deaths and desertions. Includes two small hand-drawn maps of routes in Nevada, along with Foote's accounts of a cholera outbreak in Nicaragua that claimed the lives of several of his fellow soldiers (2-5 January 1867), a robbery carried out by some members of his detachment near Placerville, California (17 July 1867), and his arrival at Sitka (9 October 1867).
