Thomas W. Cridler International Correspondence, Morocco, 1902 May-August
Scope and Contents
Included in the folder is correspondence with James W.S. Langerman, Vice Consul-General of Morocco. Langerman went to great lengths to ensure the participation of Morocco at the Fair. The letters and newspaper clippings chronicle Langerman's 12-day journey to Fez to hand deliver a personal invitation from President Roosevelt to participate in the Fair, as well as a gift of four silver plates. Cridler and Langerman's correspondence also hints at their combined personal business dealings in Africa. The folder includes Langerman's 9-page "scheme," which was sent to Cridler regarding the exportation of black Americans to work in the rubber plantations of the Belgian Congo.
