Scope and Contents

Map depicts 239 college football teams placed geographically and represented by pennants or mascots with the locations, nicknames, and the 1940 records of the schools in a key at the bottom. The map also depicts Grantland Rice's All-American selections for 1940; the seals of some schools; traditional rivalries; official signals; the Walter Camp Memorial Arch at the Yale Bowl; major conferences; major pro teams; and the biggest upset of 1940, Dartmouth 3 - Cornell 0. Underneath a picture of Grantland Rice, text reads, "I'm delighted to be associated with the Albert Richard All-America Football Map showing my All-American selections for 1940. I know this colorful, informative map will help hundreds of thousands enjoy football more than ever before this season. As a pictorial source of records, information, and data, this map is invaluable to every football enthusiast, young or old, and gives a completely unified picture of America's greatest sport." Around the edge of the map, recent conference champions are listed. The reverse of the map includes advertisements for Albert Richard clothes, lists 1941 schedules for "major conferences school, including Army, Navy, Notre Dame," and includes a short article by Grantland Rice titled, "What to Look for When Watching Modern Football." This map was distributed by Karstens of Madison, Wisconsin.
