Background

Catholic journalist Gary MacEoin was born in Curry, County Sligo, Ireland, 12 June 1909. He earned a bachelor's degree at London University and a Ph.D. at the National University of Ireland. He began his journalistic career as a reporter for London and Dublin newspapers in the 1930s and early 1940s. He served as editorial director of the Port-of-Spain Gazette in Trinidad from 1944 until 1947.

He came to the United States in 1949 and worked as the Sunday supplement editor for La Prensa in New York City for a year. He served as editor of various publications and wrote articles for Catholic magazines. He was among the journalists who covered the Second Vatican Council.

He moved to Arizona in the 1970s and joined the Sanctuary Movement to help refugees from Central America. He published many books on Catholicism, Latin America, Socialism, and Human Rights. He died in Leesburg, Virginia, 9 July 2003.
