Content Description

This collection is made up of the event posters for various Notre Dame campus events collected by Richard Bizot, a former English professor (1965-72). Bizot was the first faculty member to act as counsel to the Collegiate Jazz Festival (CJF) starting in 1967. Collection materials are posters advertising cultural and social events taking place across Notre Dame and in the surrounding community from 1969 to 1971. Outside of Notre Dame, the two other referenced locations in the collection materials are the O’Laughlin Auditorium in the Moreau Center for the Arts on Saint Mary’s College’s campus and the Laurel Club in South Bend, Indiana. These events were focused most heavily on music and the arts, including the CJF as well as other music and art festivals, concerts, as well as political rallies, protests, and similar events. The posters, themselves, are a mix of handmade (including the use of various mediums) and printed posters of varying proportions. Bizot also provided a notes document compiling his memories of the different events referenced by each of the posters, as well as short essays detailing his own involvement with the CJF and his interaction with the band “The Magnificent 7.” He also included a selection of photocopied newspaper and magazine articles relevant to the referenced events.

Biographical / Historical

While finishing the dissertation for his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia, Richard Bizot worked as an instructor at Notre Dame (1965-66). Upon its completion, he was an assistant professor at Notre Dame for five years (1966-72). Continuing in his professional career, Bizot was a professor of English at the University of Northern Florida, Jackson, from 1972 until his retirement with Emeritus status.

During his time teaching at Notre Dame, Bizot was the first faculty member to act as counsel to the Collegiate Jazz Festival in 1967. He was brought into this position by Paul Schlaver and John Noel—CJF chairs 1965-66 and 1966-67 respectively—in order to, in his own words in the notes provided with the collection materials, “improve the festival’s continuity of operation from year to year.” Bizot went on to maintain this position until he departed Notre Dame, after a total of five years.
