Background

Founded in 1939 as an association of Roman Catholic canon lawyers, many of them alumni, students, and faculty of the Catholic University of America's School of Canon Law, the Canon Law Society of America for first several years met annually for one-day meetings in New York City, in conjunction with the alumni reunion of the Catholic University of America, to hear papers concerning Canon Law and to support the publication of The Jurist, a journal associated with the Catholic University of America. Beginning in 1942 CLSA also held regional meetings. In the late 1940s meetings began to last for more than one day and CLSA decided not to associate its annual meeting with the Catholic University alumni reunions.
