Background
Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. Thomas J. Mueller was born 25 May 1934 in Chicago, Illinois. He was married and had five children. In 1956 he graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology where he earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering. In 1961 Thomas Mueller received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois specializing in gas dynamics. Thomas Mueller has been a faculty member of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame since 1965. He served as Department Chairman from 1988 to 1996. Then he became Distinguished Roth-Gibbson Professor of Aerospace Engineering in 1989. After his retirement in 2005, Thomas Mueller served as professor emeritus at Notre Dame. He was also elected to the Faculty Senate from 1969 to 1972. During his professional career, Thomas Mueller received many recognitions and honors. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics named him a fellow in aerospace sciences in 2004, and distinguished lecturer for 1980-1981. He was also an American Society of Mechanical Engineering Fellow since 1975. In 1957 Thomas Mueller worked as an engineer for the United Aircraft Corporation Research Laboratories. His consulting activities include work in 1967 at NASA, Langley Research Center; both in 1973 and in 1983 at AGARD (NATO) in Paris, France; and in 1999 at the Office of Naval Research in Arlington. Thomas Mueller has published several books and many articles in scholarly journals and reviews.
