Background
American poet, author of several volumes of poetry, Ernest Sandeen earned a B. Litt. degree from Oxford University (1933) and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa (1940). After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he began his teaching career in the English department at Notre Dame in 1946. He served as chair of the department, 1965-1968, and won the Sheedy Award for excellence in teaching in 1976. He died in 1997 at the age of 88.
