Scope and Contents

This collection contains the personal papers of Rev. Auguste Lemonnier, C.S.C. (1849-1874), President of the University of Notre Dame from 1872-1874. The collection covers the period 1845-1874, and contains documents generated during his seminary education in France (1857-1861) as well as during his stay at Notre Dame (1861-1874). Much of the material is in French.

The correspondence series contains transcriptions of letters sent by Lemonnier to his family in Ahuille, France from 1859-1874. These transcriptions were sent to Notre Dame by Henri Lemonnier-Dubourg from 1938-1940. The originals are kept in the Archives de la Roche in France. All other documents in this series are originals.

Transcription of the English portions of Lemonnier's diaries are included in the folders; these transcriptions are not complete.
