Frain, Father Celestin M., New Orleans, Louisiana, to Bishop Francis Xavier Leray, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1882 September 9
Scope and Contents
Frain is sorry to have given Leray the trouble of asking half the tax of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church for 1882. Frain understood the circular of June 1881 to say that he must pay $90 by July 1. But Frain believes that Leray's instruction left them the choice of paying their tax in a single payment at the end of the year or semi-annually. Frain will do his best to pay during next week. As for the balance of $45 fom last year, Leray is to remember that he told Frain in speaking of Frain's predecessor, Father Anthony Borias, that Borias paid one fourth of the 1881 tax since he had collected all the revenues of the parish from January up to April 10 when Frain took possession. Frain has only to send Leray's receipt for $135 paid by Frain on December 30, 1881 as proof that there is no balance to pay. :: VI-3-d A.L.S. French 3pp. 12mo.
