Scope and Contents

Enaut remained with Father Joseph Mary Quélard to the last. For a month he had been going to and from Vicksburg, but after the arrival of Father C. Mahé, he remained at the bedside. Quélard suffered much. His death was the death of a saint. Last Sunday morning he offered his sufferings for Doctor O'Leary, his nurse, his parents, and his fellow priests of the diocese of Natchitoches. His last words were "Father Louis Gergaud is coming for me." Now he rests in peace by Gergaud's side. Father H. Oberfeld came to Monroe together with 7 gentlemen and 5 ladies. Next week Enaut will go to Lake Providence and Milliken's Bend to solemnize a funeral service for Quélard, and he will stop at Vicksburg to settle the most pressing claims. He has already spent over $300 and has not settled doctor's bill, funeral expenses, and other outlays. He found $50 in Quélard's possession and received contributions totaling $262.25. Next week his expenses will increase by his going to Lake Providence to see about the state affair and to report to Leray. He knows that Leray will help him to settle the bills. :: VI-3-b A.L.S. 4pp. 4to.
