His reasons for not going to the retreat are: he has already made a retreat this year; he will replace Father Victor Gavard . The roads are so bad from the rains that Father Jean Arthur Poyet cannot use a horse. It would be impossible for him to minister to all. Poyet has asked him to replace him at Morganza for sick calls.
